Nigeria's Finance Minister: Zainab Ahmed
In what is setting to be a long drawn fight, State Governor have sued the government of General Mohammadu Buhari for refusing to share trillions of Naira in recovered funds with the 36 states.
In a lawsuit filed with the supreme court of Nigeria since March, Governors of the 36 states seek an order on Mohammdu Buhari government to explain the whereabout of the N1.8 trillion (about $4.7 billion) of stolen cash that has been recovered.
In an affidavit the state governors through the governors forum affirmed that the funds have bypassed the proper channels and may have been channeled to special projects or unknown destination.
The plaintiffs want the court to rule that Buhari, Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed and Attorney General Abubakar Malami acted unconstitutionally by withholding the funds by not transferring same to the so-called Federation Account for onward distribution among the different tiers of the government.
While spokesman for both Buhari and Ahmed declined comments, that of Malami defended the actions of the Federal Government.
