Ahead of the 2027 general election, a newly formed coalition of opposition leaders claims it is close to reaching a final consensus on its structure and plans. The coalition's main challenge has been finding an alternative political party to join.
The coalition acknowledged that while some individuals have
raised the issue of zoning, the matter has not been formally discussed in their
meetings. They stated that the current focus is on getting leaders to agree to
work together, recognizing that "prospective members should set aside
personal ambitions to contest the 2027 elections".
The coalition's statement was issued on Monday in Abuja and
signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman of the ruling All
Progressives Congress (APC).
Last week, some opposition leaders held a press conference in
Abuja to oppose the presidential declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers
State. They also said the group would work as a coalition to unseat President
Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
The key figures in the coalition include former Vice President
and 2023 PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra Governor and
2023 LP candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai, and
Tinubu's former ally Babachir Lawal. They are joined by some disgruntled APC
members, such as former Nasarawa Governor and APC ex-chairman Abdullahi Adamu,
former Rivers Governor and Transport Minister Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, and
former Ekiti Governor and Solid Minerals Minister John Kayode Fayemi.
Lukman noted that Atiku Abubakar had confirmed the formation of
the coalition during the press conference, generating widespread interest and
debate. He stated that negotiations are ongoing and no final decisions have
been made. Formal announcements with full details will be made once the process
is concluded.
According to Lukman, this has generated wide interest and
national debates with varied interpretations.
He said in order to set the records straight, it was important
to state that negotiations are ongoing and nothing has been finalized.
"Once concluded, formal announcements will be made with all
the details regarding the composition of membership, program of action towards
2027, framework for contesting the 2027 elections, etc.," he stated.
Consultations to form a coalition are in advanced stages, as the organizers are reaching out to prospective members and mapping out key issues for potential agreements, according to the source.
He said, "At this stage of negotiations, the main focus is around getting leaders to agree to work together, and substantially, there is strong recognition that prospective members should set aside personal ambitions to contest the 2027 elections.
"The second issue being negotiated is the
political party that will be the platform for the 2027 electoral contest.
