Pandemonium erupted in Calabar, Cross River State, on Sunday after an armed police officer opened fire on a group of passersby, killing four people. The shooting occurred near the popular Calabar Watt Market in the Calabar South local government area.
According to LEADERSHIP, the police officer fired several shots into the air, but the bullets mistakenly struck and killed the victims instantly. Eyewitnesses stated that the victims were innocent bystanders who had no altercation with the police.
"The victims were innocent and passersby who did not have any quarrel with the police officer. I suspect the officer ran amok," said an eyewitness.
The shooting caused panic among residents and traders in the busy commercial area. Fearing a potential reprisal attack, the police barricaded the road as the identities of the victims remained unknown.
Another eyewitness, Mrs. Theresa Etim, described the scene as "terrifying," with residents and traders fleeing in different directions shortly after the shootings.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear at the time of reporting.
Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident, stating, "It's true, we are at the scene of the incident. The officer misbehaved; we suspect he has become mentally unstable."
Ugbo added that the police command was working to unravel the mystery behind the shooting of the innocent victims.
